BUSINESS GROWTH

The Williamson Wines Story

PUT YOUR HEART IN YOUR BUSINESS

And your business in your heart.

Williamson Wines did not begin with a marketing strategy. It began with the life Dawn and Bill Williamson wanted to live—one filled with wine, food, travel, friendship and the pleasure of bringing people together.

The business grew from that life. The two have remained inseparable ever since.

Begin with What You Love

A Life Before It Was a Business

Dawn and I have always loved travel, food and wine—not as separate interests, but as parts of the same life.

Wine introduces a place. Food brings that place to the table. Travel supplies the stories, and good company makes the entire exercise worthwhile.

When we began Williamson Wines, we did not invent a lifestyle for the brand. We built the winery around the way we already lived.

“Whatever you love and would like to fill your life should become the heart of your work.”

— Bill Williamson

From Vineyard to Glass

Make Every Decision Count

In the beginning, Dawn asked how I knew we would make good wine. My answer was simple enough: wine is the result of a long sequence of decisions.

It begins with the vineyard and continues through farming, harvest, fermentation, blending, aging and, finally, the glass on the table.

No single decision can guarantee a remarkable wine. But if every decision is made carefully—and if convenience is never permitted to outrank quality—the finished wine will reflect that care.

Today we work with more than 30 vineyard sites across Napa and Sonoma. We farm for low yields, harvest carefully and make our wines slowly, with minimal intervention and nothing unnecessary between the vineyard and the bottle.

A Different Path

Share the Wine Directly

We made an early decision not to sell Williamson wines through distributors, stores or restaurants.

Plenty of sensible people told us this was lunacy. They may even have enjoyed telling us.

But our wines came from small, carefully chosen vineyards and were made in limited quantities. We wanted to know the people drinking them, hear what they enjoyed and share more than a sales receipt.

So we opened a tasting room in Healdsburg, poured the wines and served a small bite of food beside them. People tasted, lingered, returned and brought their friends.

Many joined the wine club. Over time, members became friends and friends became part of the Williamson family.

“We did not want to send our wines into the world and never know where they went. We wanted to share them with people.”

— Bill Williamson

Wine Belongs with Food

We Do Not Simply Pour Wine. We Cook for It.

In much of the world, wine is not treated as a separate event. It is part of the meal.

That idea shaped Williamson from the beginning. Every tasting includes food because the right dish can reveal something in a wine that the glass alone cannot.

Our seven-chef culinary team develops dishes for new wines and has created more than 600 recipes. Some are inspired by the great regional traditions of France, Italy, Spain and Australia. Others begin with whatever looks particularly good in the market that morning.

This is also why we make such a broad collection. Bordeaux-style wines belong naturally with one sort of meal; Burgundy- and Rhône-inspired wines with another. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and aromatic whites each bring something different to the table.

There is no single perfect wine for every dish. Fortunately, there is no rule requiring us to make only one.

More Than a Shipment

Membership Should Feel Like Belonging

A wine club should offer more than a cardboard box arriving at the door several times a year.

Williamson members can customize their wines, explore more than 45 releases, attend lunches and events, discover recipes and artisan foods, and travel with us to some of the world’s great wine and food regions.

Every shipment is protected by our satisfaction-or-replace policy, and club members receive fixed-price ground shipping of $35 per 12-bottle case throughout the contiguous United States.

The details matter, but the real value lies in the relationship. We listen to what members enjoy, remember their preferences and keep finding new reasons to bring everyone back to the table.

From Values to Action

A Business Built from the Heart

Difficult years arrive in every business. Vineyards face frost, heat and drought. Markets turn. Plans misbehave. Sensible people occasionally suggest taking up something easier.

Passion does not remove those difficulties. It gives you a reason to work through them.

That is the difference between a marketing tactic and a way of life. A tactic survives only while it is convenient. A life built around something you love keeps pulling you forward.

Success is not a station at which one finally arrives.
It is the way one chooses to travel.

Follow your passion. Do the work. Share it generously.
The rest has a way of unfolding.
